Celebrate Earth Day By Shredding Responsibly: How Document Destruction Helps The Planet

Earth Day is a time to reflect on how our actions impact the environment and explore ways to protect our planet. While recycling and reducing single-use plastics are often top of mind, there’s another critical—but often overlooked—way to contribute to sustainability: responsible document shredding.

Secure shredding not only protects sensitive information but also plays an important role in reducing paper waste and supporting a healthier planet. This blog will explore how document destruction can make a difference this Earth Day and provide tips for eco-friendly shredding practices you can adopt.

Why Responsible Document Shredding Matters

The Paper Waste Problem

Did you know that paper accounts for nearly 26% of the total waste in landfills? Despite the rise of digital communication, paper usage in offices remains prevalent. Every discarded bank statement, invoice, or confidential document increases the demand for new paper production, contributing to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions along the supply chain.

While recycling is a key solution, too much paper ends up in landfills due to improper disposal. That’s where responsible shredding comes in—not only does it securely dispose of sensitive documents, but it also ensures that shredded paper can be recycled efficiently.

Secure Shredding Protects You and the Planet

Secure shredding services not only help you protect personal information from identity theft but also improve the recyclability of paper. Professional document-shredding services ensure that shredded materials are properly sorted and sent to recycling facilities rather than landfills. This enhances the paper recycling process, reduces waste, and minimizes environmental harm.

By shredding responsibly, you’re not only safeguarding sensitive information but also actively playing a role in the global push for sustainability.

Benefits of Document Destruction

1. Reduction In Deforestation

Recycling shredded paper reduces the need for virgin paper production, helping to conserve trees. Each ton of paper recycled can save 17 trees—that’s tangible progress toward preserving forests and the biodiversity within them.

2. Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions

When paper decays in landfills, it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to global warming. Shredded and recycled paper avoids this harmful process by being repurposed into products like tissue paper, packaging materials, and more.

3. Conserves Water And Energy

Producing recycled paper uses 50% less water and consumes 40% less energy compared to creating new paper from wood pulp. Through document-shredding services that prioritize recycling, you’re actively reducing the environmental footprint of paper production.

4. Reduces Landfill Occupancy

Landfills are not limitless. Diverting shredded paper to recycling facilities keeps valuable resources out of landfills and ensures they are reused rather than wasted.

Tips for Eco-Friendly Shredding

Sort Before You Shred

Not all documents require shredding. Separate sensitive documents (like financial statements and medical records) from recyclable non-sensitive items (like magazines). This ensures that only necessary paper is shredded securely, reducing unnecessary energy use.

Opt for Professional Document Shredding Services

While personal shredders are convenient, they often produce paper strips that are difficult for recycling facilities to process. Professional shredding services use techniques that create small, uniform shreds, making the recycling process far more efficient.

Many document shredding services ensure your shredded paper is recycled, following an eco-friendly path from start to finish.

Shred in Bulk

Instead of shredding a few documents at a time, collect sensitive papers and shred them in bulk. This minimizes energy use and allows you to take advantage of scheduled shredding services or a one-time purge from secure providers, often offering eco-conscious disposal options.

Scan Documents to Minimize Paper Use

Prevention is better than cure. Cut down on paper use by switching to digital solutions like document scanning and secure storage. Scanning invoices, receipts, and records reduces clutter and ensures easy access and better organization. While shredding helps recycle paper, going digital minimizes the need for paper in the first place, reducing overall demand.

Choosing The Right Document Shredding Service

Not all shredding services are created equal. When selecting a provider, look for those with a strong commitment to sustainability. Many secure shredding companies go beyond basic shredding and offer features such as:

  • Certificate of Recycling: Documentation ensuring that shredded materials have been properly recycled.
  • On-Site Shredding: Mobile shredding trucks provide a convenient and environmentally friendly way to shred documents securely at your location.
  • Scheduled Shredding Service: By choosing ongoing shredding services, you can ensure that your documents are regularly disposed of in an eco-friendly manner.

While shredding paper may seem simple and mundane, it has a significant impact on the environment. According to recent statistics, approximately 40% of all waste produced in the United States is paper-based. This means that over one-third of our waste could be recycled through proper shredding and disposal methods.

Supporting Earth Day Initiatives

This Earth Day, some document-shredding services may organize special initiatives, such as free shredding events or partnerships with recycling organizations. Participating helps the environment and supports community engagement around sustainable practices.

Corrigan Record Storage is partnering with WDIV Local 4 and Human-I-T for the Earth Day “Shred and Protect” event to provide a secure and eco-friendly way to dispose of sensitive documents and unwanted electronics.

The event will occur on Tuesday, April 22nd, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Corrigan’s Novi facility, located at 45200 Grand River Ave, Novi, MI 48375. Residents can bring up to 300 pounds of paper documents (roughly 8–10 small copy boxes) per vehicle for on-site shredding and responsible recycling of e-waste.

Celebrate Earth Day with Corrigan Record Storage

Earth Day reminds us that even small actions can produce substantial positive change. Whether you’re an individual, small business, or corporation, responsibly shredding documents can help secure sensitive information, reduce waste, and minimize your environmental footprint.
